Opening: Coco Lodge hit back at trolls who criticized her looks after she appeared on Love Island
Coco appeared to criticize Love Island last summer, claiming she wasn’t warned about trolls before bosses gave her back her phone.
When she appeared at Capital Breakfast in July, Coco said she was bullied by trolls for her looks, which baffled her.
Host Sian Welby told her: “You’ve gotten some horrible, horrible trolling, horrible comments on your Instagram, on Twitter, I mean, what was it like coming out of the mansion and suddenly seeing all of this?”
Review: Coco has also hit out at the editing on the show, saying it “deprived” her of showing her “100% real self.”
Coco replied: “I just wasn’t expecting it because I wasn’t forewarned. When I got my phone back it was literally on the way to the airport and I was reading all these comments about my looks and how I look and I was literally shocked.
“I know there was an article published about me at the airport and it said ‘Coco Lodge is fuming when she sees the trolls’ comments’ and I just think I was upset, I wasn’t angry, it hurt it is what it is.’
A Love Island spokesman said all islanders are receiving: “Training on the impact of social media and how to deal with potential negativity.
“Cast members are told to consider any potential ramifications of participating in the show and to work through this decision-making process in consultation with their family and those closest to them to ensure they feel it is the right thing for them is.
‘[They are given] a welfare team dedicated exclusively to the islanders, both during the show and afterwards.
‘[As well as] Tailored training on how to use social media and advice on finances and adjusting to life at home.”
Following Mike Thalassitis’ death in 2019, producers announced major changes to the islanders’ duty of care, saying everyone will have access to therapy sessions, social media and financial training, and at least 14 months of “proactive” contact.
The ITV show addressed their duty of care after two islanders; Sophie Gradon and Mike, as well as host Caroline Flack, tragically died by suicide within 20 months.
