QB Derek Carr writes farewell message to Raiders, fans

Quarterback Derek Carr has said goodbye to the Las Vegas Raiders, bringing what appears to be the end of his nine-year tenure with the team.

Carr wrote his farewell message on social media on Thursday, saying, “It breaks my heart that I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye in person.”

“We’ve certainly been on a rollercoaster ride in our 9 years together,” Carr wrote. “From the bottom of my heart I am so grateful and grateful for the years of support you have given my family and I. We’ve had our share of heartbreaking moments and thrilling rides to win games, and it always felt like you were there next to me.

“Leaving is especially hard because I can honestly say I gave you everything, every day, in season and off season. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but I hope I left you with more than a few great memories as a Raider fan.”

Carr added that “the fire that burns within me to win a championship still rages,” writing that he was excited to play for a new team.

Carr signed a three-year, $121.5 million extension with Las Vegas earlier this spring, but the deal allows the Raiders to cut him within three days of the Super Bowl for just a $5.625 million salary cap.

Carr, 31, was benched for the Raiders’ last two games this season, both losing 6-11, and he had retired from the team to avoid distracting.

Carr joined the Raiders as a second-round pick in 2014 and threw for 35,222 yards, 217 touchdowns and 99 interceptions in 142 games. He played in his only postseason game for Las Vegas in 2021, losing to the Cincinnati Bengals in the wild card round.
