33 Things You Missed If You Forgot To Watch The 2023 Golden Globes This Week

1. ICYMI, the 2023 Golden Globes took place on Tuesday night – yes, last Tuesday night – and some of Hollywood’s brightest stars were in attendance spinning the red carpet! This included Michelle Yeoh in this stunning Armani Privé gown:

3. The show began with a monologue from this year’s host Jerrod Carmichael, who held absolutely nothing back.

He discussed everything from last year’s show, which was skipped due to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association investigation, to disclosing the amount of his paycheck for the hosting gig ($500,000).

4. First prize of the night went to Ke Huy Quan for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his role in Everything Everywhere All at Once, and he delivered an emotionally charged speech that kept everyone in the house dry.

In his speech, he thanked Steven Spielberg – who happened to be present, having himself been nominated for several awards for The Fabelmans – for giving him his first role in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. His speech described his life as a child actor and the feeling of being forgotten before doing it all at once, and it was full of hope. It’ll make you cry – I’m just letting you know.

5. Next came the Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture award, which went to Angela Bassett for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – which made her her second Golden Globe nomination AND her second win. You can’t lose!

This win was also historic as Angela is now the first actress to take home a major award for a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

6. Tyler James Williams took home the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series for his role in Abbott Elementary.

In his speech, he took a moment to note that he hoped this was “a win for Gregory Eddie” and hoped it would prove that his stories “are just as important as any other story.”

7. Next up were a few back-to-back music-related offers, revealing that Rihanna and A$AP Rocky were actually in the audience the entire time after sneaking in!

8. The Best Original Score Award – Motion Picture went to Justin Hurwitz for his work on Babylon.

9. And the award for Best Original Song – Motion Picture went to RRR’s “Naatu Naatu” – which beat out Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga – which was accepted by composer MM Keeravani.

Also, the song is kind of absurdly catchy and has been stuck in my head since I first heard it a few months ago. I beg you to listen, please:

10. Back to television, Jeremy Allen White took home the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for his work on The Bear.

12. Next up was the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, which went to Colin Farrell for The Banshees of Inisherin.

Colin then used the beginning of his speech to commend award presenter Ana de Armas for her work in Blonde.

During her incredible speech, the playoff track slowly began to blare, leading her to threaten the music and say, “Shut up, please.” i can beat you up That is real.”

14. Best Picture – Animated went to Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, beating Turning Red and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

He used his time to reiterate that animation is NOT just a children’s genre, it is an art form in its own right and should be respected as such.

15. Next came Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama, which Austin Butler took home for his role in Elvis.

Independent but related: I could listen to him all day – that VOICE. So relaxing.

16. Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series – Drama went to Zendaya for her work on Euphoria.

Unfortunately, Zendaya was not present at the ceremony, so we missed an iconic moment. But here’s one of my favorites from the past to fill us up:

17. Then came Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical Comedy or Drama TV Series, which went to Julia Garner for her work on Ozark.

18. Billy Porter then presented Ryan Murphy with the Carol Burnett TV Achievement Award.

Ryan used his speaking time to point out the incredible BIPOC and queer actors he’s worked with over the years and gave special shout outs to Michaela Jae Rodriguez, Billy Porter, Niecy Nash, Matt Bomer and Jeremy Pope while sharing the experiences highlighted by BIPOC and queer actors.

19. Afterwards, Cate Blanchett won Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for her work in Tar, although she was not present to accept the award.

20. Best Film – Non-English Language went to Argentina in 1985 and filmmakers Santiago Miter and Ricardo Darín took the stage to accept the award.

21. Martin McDonagh took home the award for Best Screenplay – Motion Picture for his work on The Banshees of Inisherin.

22. Best Director – Motion Picture went to Steven Spielberg for The Fabelmans.

23. Paul Walter Hauser received the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or TV Movie for his role in Black Bird.

24. Then, Jennifer Coolidge won Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Made-for-TV Movie for her role in The White Lotus.

Her speech was predictably hilarious, but you could definitely tell she wasn’t expecting to win. The highlight, IMHO, was when it cut to The White Lotus creator Mike White sobbing tears of joy for his friend and colleague.

25. Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or TV Movie went to Amanda Seyfried for The Dropout.

Much like Zendaya and Cate, Amanda wasn’t present at the ceremony, but her absence was conspicuous because the presenters — Mo Brings Plenty and Cole Hauser — pointed out that she couldn’t be there because she was “deep in the process” this week to create a new musical,” which led to the internet saying, “…huh?!”

26. Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Movie for TV went to Evan Peters for Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which is an absurd title for something when you really think about it.

27. Best Limited TV Series, Anthology Series, or TV Movie went to The White Lotus. Mike White took the stage to accept the award with his cast and he let the audience know he would be delivering his speech entirely in Italian but unfortunately he was actually very drunk at that point in the night.

My favorite quote is, of course, “There was no food! The food, when we got here they said, ‘Food’s over, just drink!’” because if that’s not me at every Christmas party, I don’t know what is.

28. Tracy Morgan and Jamie Lee Curtis then took the stage to present Eddie Murphy with the Cecil B. DeMille Award.

Eddie delivered a heartfelt speech, ending by saying, “There is one definitive plan you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, success and peace of mind…there are three things you must do: Pay your taxes, mind your business and keep the name of Will Smith’s wife out of your damn mouth.”

29. Best Performance by an Actor in a TV Series – Drama went to Kevin Costner for his role in my mom and dad’s favorite show, Yellowstone (seriously, that’s all I know about that show. But they love it, it replaced The Blacklist for you).

Kevin was ALSO not there to accept his award, but the highlight was Regina Hall catching all the giggles as she tried to accept it on his behalf. It was lovely. You can watch the clip here:

30. Then Best TV Series – Musical or Comedy went to Abbott Elementary. The entire cast took the stage, and Quinta used her time to thank those in the room who inspired her to do comedy, including Henry Winkler, Bob Odenkirk, and Seth Rogen.

She also yelled at Brad Pitt just because, and I can’t blame her because honestly, what else was she supposed to do? DON’T say hello? He sits! TO THE RIGHT! THERE!

31st Best TV Series – Drama went to House of the Dragon and you could tell they didn’t plan to win 100%. Miguel Sapochnik joked about how disheveled he looked, saying, “As you can see, we didn’t think we were going to win, so I didn’t get ready.”

32. And last but not least, the last film awards of the evening! First prize for Best Film – Musical or Comedy went to The Banshees of Inisherin.

33. Best Picture – Drama went to The Fabelmans.

And that’s pretty much all you missed! Now that you’ve got the Golden Globes 2023 on you, you can forget awards season altogether until next one – but don’t worry, we’ll stock you up and catch up for that one too!
