Julianne Moore, 62, was once advised to ‘try to look prettier’

Not only is she an acting icon, she is one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood.

But not even Julianne Moore is immune to criticism for her looks.

Speaking to The Times, the actress – who has previously spoken out about aging – revealed she was once advised to “try to look prettier” by someone who worked in the film industry.

“Someone in the film industry said to me, ‘You should try to look prettier,'” she told the publication.

“I thought, ‘I don’t know if I can do this.’ Obviously our business is a physical business, but beauty and beauty are subjective,” she said.

The famous redhead also confessed that as a young girl, her fiery locks made her feel insecure.

“Growing up, my red hair made me feel like an outsider. Redheads make up 2% of the world’s population. Nobody wants to feel like they’re in the minority, especially as a little kid,” she said.

Though she now deeply identifies with her red hair, Julianne admits the desire to be a “tanned blonde” remains.

“Now I feel very identified with my hair and freckles, but there’s still a part of me that I’d rather be tanned.”

Julianne also revealed how her tendency to sunburn easily meant she retained her youthful skin.

“I can’t be in the sun for half an hour without burning. I look just like my mom and she said to me, “Keep out of the sun,” she recalls.

“Because I’m so fair and have freckles, I always had to wear a hat and sunscreen. This has made the biggest difference for me in terms of caring for my skin. But that’s not what people want to hear.’

This isn’t the first time Julianne has addressed beauty standards in the industry.

Recently opening up to Vanity Fair, Julianne said, “I think the business is changing, which is great.”

“Probably helping an aging demographic. In terms of beauty standards, I think we’re significantly more diverse and hopefully more age-conscious too,” she continued.

Julianne expanded on the topic of aging when she opened up to The Wall Street Journal.

“People have talked to me about aging since I’ve been in business,” she revealed, adding, “but this idea that it’s something we have control over, or that there’s a good way or a bad way, doing it is just not true.’

“I actually think when we really feel aging, we see it in relation to how much life we’ve lived,” the star continued, expressing her thoughts on the perception of aging.

Julianne shares two children, Liv, 20, and Caleb, 25, with her husband Bart Freundlich.
