Soccer: Two Canadian women nominated for FIFA awards

Ontario midfielder Jessie Fleming and Canada women’s national team head coach Bev Priestman were nominated for the FIFA Year-End Awards on Thursday.

In December, Fleming was named Canada’s Player of the Year for the second year in a row. The Chelsea FC representative could add a huge honor to her already extensive list, but the 24-year-old will face serious competition for the FIFA Best Player title.

Her Australian teammate Samantha Kerr is among the contenders, as are the greats Ada Hegerberg, Alex Morgan, Wendie Renard, Beth Mead and Alexia Putellas. She won last year.

Priestman is nominated for Coach of the Year. She led Canada to another great season by guiding the country to the CONCACAF Women’s Championship final in July. Under the England coach’s guidance, the Maple Leaf 2022 showed a record of 11 wins, three losses and three draws.
