Hydro-Québec: Quebec poised to review business rates

Electricity tariffs for businesses in Quebec could be revised upwards, Minister for Economy, Innovation and Energy Pierre Fitzgibbon suggested on Thursday.

“We have to be careful, the question of the price of the electron has to be checked. The world price of energy is rising so it is certain that we need to be careful about who we allocate and at what price we allocate,” Mr Fitzgibbon said during a scrum with the press.

Aluminum smelters would not evade this tariff revision, even if they are profitable for the province.

“When we talk about productivity per hour worked, it is a very important factor, in Quebec the average is not $50 per hour but $175,” explained the minister, referring to aluminum.

This reflection comes a few days before the announcement of the departure of Hydro-Québec President and CEO Sophie Brochu next April. Several disagreements had been observed between her and the Legault government over Crown Corporation’s future projects.
