Cuban vaccines induce neutralizing antibodies to Omicrón

“The Dr.C. Rolando Pérez, Director of Science and Innovation at BioCubaFarma, highlighted among the most relevant results of 2022 the experimental evidence that the Cuban vaccines Abdala and Soberana induce neutralizing antibodies against the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus,” underlines a message on the social network Twitter.

The same was published in the network of networks by the Cuban Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), which recently confirmed that Abdala has demonstrated its safety and effectiveness in the fight against the pandemic.

The immunogen is well tolerated and has a low rate of mild side effects: less than 0.07 per 100,000 people.

The Cuban Abdala vaccine is the first anti-Covid-19 immunogen in Latin America and the Caribbean.

As of July 2021, the injectable has been approved by the national emergency regulator after demonstrating 92.28 percent efficacy in preventing symptomatic illness and 90 percent efficacy in critically ill patients with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

It also showed a 99.15 percent increase in antibodies in volunteers aged three to 11 and 98.28 percent in those aged 12 to 18.

The CIGB, creators of the immunogen, confirmed that the increase in antibody titers in these populations was four-fold or more from the first dose of the drug.

The main researcher of the studies with this vaccine, Sonia Resik, once emphasized that more than 80 percent of the adverse events reported in children were mild and the rest of the indicators were comparable to the data obtained in adults, a fact that confirmed its effectiveness.

On the other hand, the Abdala vaccine maintains its safety, efficacy and immune response to Covid-19 over time, confirming its suitability for booster doses.

Their immune response was higher in people who had already been vaccinated with three injections of this drug and in others with Sinopharm (China) and Sputnik (Russia).

Cuba also has the Finlay Vaccine Institute’s immunogens Soberana 02 and Soberana Plus to fight the Covid-19 pandemic and two vaccine candidates (Soberana 01 and Mambisa) in the clinical trials phase with important results, according to official sources.

Countries like Venezuela, Nicaragua, Iran and Vietnam are administering Cuban vaccines to their populations.
