The weather over the weekend will be mild, after that it will be a little cooler and rain and snow are expected in many places.
The weekend weather is still mild overall for now. After that, however, it will get colder and there will be heavy snowfall from the south, locally also in the lowlands. That was the forecast on Thursday from GeoSphere Austria, the former Central Institute of Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG).
Cold front with rain passes through Austria on Friday
On Friday, a cold front will pass quickly from the west, so that dense clouds with rain and snow above 1,200 meters will predominate, except in the south. Already in the afternoon the clouds in the interior of the Alps and in the southwest will break again, the north side of the Alps will be in a northwesterly flow with partially persistent precipitation. At night, it will rain and snow a little in the east and south. The west wind refreshes quickly. The first temperatures are minus four to six degrees, the daily maximums are three to ten degrees.
Saturday will be mild with lots of sun
On Saturday, the intermediate influence high in the Eastern Alps slowly eases again. After morning fog clears or areas of high fog, especially in the south and southeast, the sun appears largely before high clouds from a warm front move in from the west again. The rain doesn’t start until dusk in the west, and the snow line rises again to over 5,000 feet. It’s minus six to five degrees in the morning, plus four to ten degrees later.
Snow line will fall on Sunday
On Sunday, a warm front will pass north of the north side of the Alps. It mainly brings dense clouds and repeated rain. In the afternoon, a cold front will move quickly from the west, causing temperatures to drop and the snow line to drop between 1,200 and 700 meters. Only very occasionally do rain showers reach the south and southeast. At the beginning of the day minus two to plus six degrees are expected, maximum values are usually four to ten degrees.
Rain and snow forecast for the beginning of the week
On Monday, dense clouds with rain and snowfall will persist in the south and east. The snow line is usually between 500 and 800 meters, but in the south it will likely snow all the way to the lowlands. Larger amounts also accumulate between Upper Carinthia and southern Styria. Throughout the day, the precipitation is slowly moving eastwards and in many places it will be quite sunny friendly. In the evening, another disturbance with clouds and oncoming precipitation will occur in the west. The first temperatures range from minus three to plus three degrees, the daily peaks between one and seven degrees.
Tuesday brings colder temperatures
Colder air masses will flow again on Tuesday, and there will also be some heavier clouds, especially on the southern side of the Alps and in the east. There is some precipitation in some areas, with the snow line moving between low altitudes and 700 meters. The sun is most likely to be seen in the north, where it generally looks friendlier, but the forecast is still uncertain, stressed GeoSphere meteorologists, who initially predict low temperatures of minus four to plus one degree for Tuesday, with daily highs from zero to six degrees.
