The director of the National Police, Gustavo Sánchez, reiterated the day before that the measure is the best tool to ensure the protection of life and reduce the number of homicides, TV Channel 8 reported.
“We value the recommendations received by human rights organizations in Honduras to promote comprehensive responses that holistically address violence and its multidimensional impact on the lives of Honduran citizens,” he said.
The authority referred to the successes achieved during the state of emergency, which are not measured in arrests or the execution of arrest warrants, but in the protection of life and the reduction in homicides.
The government imposed a state of emergency in the country’s main cities on December 6, a measure extended by 45 days earlier this year to crack down on criminal gangs and the crime of extortion.
According to the police, the operations are intended to prevent and combat disturbances of the peace and security, the completion of extortion crimes, murders, robberies, drug trafficking and kidnappings.
Official data shows that around 650 maras (gangs) members were arrested here in one month thanks to the state of emergency declared by the Honduran executive branch.
