Tornadoes cause serious damage and at least six deaths in the United States

More than 100,000 homes are without power in Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia. Atlanta Airport has been temporarily closed.

A tornado devastated parts of the city of Selma, Alabama. Most of the city’s streets were closed due to downed power lines and trees, the city said on Facebook on Thursday. Rescue teams are on duty. Citizens were asked not to leave. Children should not leave schools. At least six deaths were reported in neighboring Autauga County.

The storm band also extends to the northeast. A tornado was spotted near Atlanta International Airport in the state of Georgia, which is the busiest airport in the United States by number of passengers. According to the US aviation authority FAA, aircraft must remain temporarily on the ground due to severe storms.

According to the US Weather Service, more than a dozen tornadoes have been recorded in Alabama in the last few hours. Hurricanes also caused severe damage northeast of Selma. More than 100,000 homes are without power in parts of Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia. A US Weather Service tornado warning is in effect for Alabama, Georgia and Florida through late evening local time.
