Robert Hur, former US Attorney US in Maryland during the administration of donald trumpwas appointed by US Attorney General Merrick Gerland as special counsel to conduct the investigation of official documents found at addresses linked to the President Joe Biden from his time as Vice President of Barack Obama (20092017). According to Gerland’s order, Hur will be responsible for “investigating the possible unauthorized removal and safekeeping of classified documents or other records discovered” at Biden’s think tank office and at his Washington residence. The White House confirmed this Thursday, the 12th, that its legal team had found new approved documents from Biden’s time as vice president in the garage of one of his Delaware mansions, after admitting a similar thought in a presidential office this week “Think Tank”. “A small number of additional documents dating back to the ObamaBiden administration and classified as confidential” were found in the garage of his home in Wilmington, Delaware, and in an adjoining room, Presidential Attorney Richard Sauber said in a statement, adding that the documents could have been taken during the 2017 transition.
Speaker of the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy, called for an investigation into Biden. “Congress needs to investigate this case,” he told the press, denouncing “a new misstep by the Biden administration.” The leader of the Congress recalled an interview with the head of state on the famous TV show 60 Minutes, broadcast by CBS, to talk about the documents found in Trump’s apartment. “He was so concerned about President Trump’s documents and now we find out that as vice president he kept them in different places for years without security,” McCarthy said, recalling that in Trump’s case, the FBI kept his mansion in Mar had searched aLago in August when the former president was not there. With that in mind, McCarthy asked why the Biden case was being handled differently. “We are in the United States and we believe in equal justice,” he said.
Biden’s administration says the contexts are different, claiming the documents found were not the result of a request and, unlike Trump’s case, there was no opposition to the restoration of classified ads deemed confidential. Biden’s attorney, Richard Sauber, says he is responsible for finding the documents and voluntarily turning them over to authorities. A 1978 law requires US presidents and vice presidents to send all their emails, letters, and other working papers to the National Archives. Given the implications, Biden commented on the matter. He said he was protected that the controversy sparked by the discovery of classified papers in one of his private homes would be resolved. “Everything will be clarified, I’m sure of that,” said the head of state. The discovery of this “think tank” happened in November but was only unveiled earlier this week. It is not known what motivated the searches, the content of the documents and who decided to send them to these locations. Karine JeanPierre, a White House spokeswoman, said only that the Justice Department is investigating the matter.
