Lima, January 13 (RHC) Organizations defending human rights in Peru this Thursday called for the release of social leaders arrested during demonstrations in the city of Ayacucho.
Hundreds of people gathered in front of the Ayacucho police station to demand the release of the imprisoned social leaders, including the President of the Ayacucho People’s Defense Front.
Peru’s National Human Rights Coordinator (Cnddhh) condemned the arrest of the three leaders of the Ayacucho People’s Defense Front at the end of a cultural event at the Casa del Maestro.
From the Cnddhh, they warned that the persecution of social leaders will only exacerbate polarization in the South American country.
On Thursday, Peru saw a new day of mobilizations in different departments and the country’s capital against President Dina Boluarte, the holding of early elections and other demands.
In the Peruvian city of Cusco, police used tear gas and firearms to suppress demonstrations, killing one minor and injuring more than 50.
Violent actions by police forces were also reported from the capital, Lima, where anti-Boluarte government social, union and union organizations had called for a mobilization to close Congress and a constituent assembly and demand justice for the Peruvians affected during the repression killed.
On January 4, he began an indefinite strike against the Boluarte government, demanding the closure of Congress, new elections, a constituent assembly and the freedom of former President Pedro Castillo.
The protests began after Congress unseated Castillo on December 7 and sworn in Boluarte as the new president. The police and military repression of the demonstrations has left nearly 50 dead and hundreds injured. (Source/Telesur)
