Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy was found not guilty to six counts of rape and one sexual assault on Friday.
A jury at Chester Crown Court in north-west England failed to reach a verdict on two other allegations against Mendy – one of attempted rape and another of rape – and were dismissed.
Prosecutors said they would seek a retrial on charges the jury was unable to reach a verdict on at the end of a months-long trial.
Mendy, 28, covered his face with both hands and rocked gently while the jury foreman announced the verdicts in a silent courtroom, the British Press Association reported. The acquittals concerned four young women or teenagers.
The unanimous verdicts were announced Wednesday by the seven men and four women on the jury. A juror had previously been released on medical grounds.
The verdicts could not be reported until the jury considered the remaining two counts. They received a majority decision from the judge, meaning he would accept a 10-1 majority for any verdict.
After 14 days of deliberation, the jury could not reach a verdict.
Louis Saha Matturie, 41, who was a co-defendant alongside Mendy and was allegedly a “fixer,” was found not guilty of three counts of rape related to two teenagers. The jury failed to reach a verdict on three counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault against him by five other women.
Mendy and Matturie have been in court since August 10, charged with multiple sex offenses by 13 women. They denied all allegations.
Man City released a brief statement saying they took note of the verdict regarding Mendy.
“As there are still open matters in this case, the club is currently unable to comment further,” said the Premier League club.
