What does a composition by the singer Shakira have to do with cars? Well, the musician directly mentioned two vehicle models in a recent song called BZRP Music Sessions No. 53. The lyrics read: “(They) traded in a Ferrari for a (Renault) Twingo”, a reference to the cheating scandals involving her exhusband Gerard Piqué, a former Barcelona soccer player.

In fact, the song, produced in collaboration with Argentine bizarre rap, is practically a hymn to elbow pain. The lyrics are full of references to Piqué’s extramarital relationship: in addition to quoting Ferrari and Renault Twingo, the song also alludes to “the exchange of a Rolex (watch) for a Casio”. Finally, in the composition, Skakira, who is 45 years old, says that “it’s worth two 22 (years)”.

Shakira’s new song sparks controversy

The fact is that Renault Twingo is a very popular car in European markets. As a result, several owners and fans of the model published posts about the case on social networks. Many even greeted the quote with good humor, but some of them heavily criticized the Colombian singer.

Even Renault’s Spanish subsidiary chimed in, posting a photo of the current generation Twingo (yes, the model is still produced in Europe) on Twitter, accompanied by the words “for boys or girls like you”. It’s a nod to the chorus of Shakira’s new song and also to the popular Luke suggestion.

Alongside Renault Twingo admirers, feminists were another group who criticized Shakira’s new music. Some of the proponents of this cause have argued that Shakira has objectified women by comparing themselves to cars or watches. Either way, the singer had an impact, but maybe not in the way she expected.

About the Renault Twingo

The Twingo is one of the most iconic cars in Renault history. The first generation in particular made a name for itself with its unusual design and excellent use of space. In Brazil, the hatchback was sold only between 1994 and 2002, but sales continue to this day in other markets. In Europe, the model is already in the third line.
