Bolsonaro’s ex minister of justice arrested for riots

A former Brazilian minister in the government of former President Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested in connection with the violent invasion of the parliament building and other institutions.

According to media reports, former Attorney General Anderson Torres was arrested yesterday on his return from the United States in the capital Brasilia. There was a Supreme Court arrest warrant against him for alleged collusion with the protesters.

Investigations also against former presidents

Thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded the government district in Brasilia on January 8 and caused great devastation. In the Congress building, the Presidential Palace and the seat of the Federal Supreme Court, they smashed windows, furniture and works of art and left graffiti calling for a coup d’état.

His anger was expressed by the electoral victory of left-wing politician Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who narrowly defeated Bolsonaro in the second round and has been in office since the beginning of the year. More than 2,000 people were arrested.

Since Friday, the STF has also been investigating Bolsonaro himself because of the disturbances. The Attorney General’s Office accuses the former president of “incitement and intellectual authorship”.
