Edgar Degas lived in Naples for a long time
The great French artist Edgar Degas who is also named the painter of the dancerswas very attached to the city of Naples, where he lived as a young man where he took his first steps as an artist by attending the Academy of Fine Arts. Degas lived in Naples a Lower Trinity Majornear Piazza del Gesù Nuovo, in the historic Palazzo Pignatelli di Monteleone bought by his grandfather, the banker Renè Hilaire Degas, who moved to Naples after the French Revolution, where he married a Neapolitan and had his children, including Auguste, Edgar’s father.
The palace is still in Naples today Palazzo Pignatelli di Monteleone means or “Palazzo d’o gas” in memory of the old French owner. As a young man, the painter often stayed in the castleas recalled by a plaque at the entrance, but also in summer in a large villa in San Rocco di Capodimonte, where Edgar Degas painted some works that are now famous in the mid-19th century.

The show wants represent a hypothetical “return” of the artist to the city which certainly contributed to its creation and its definitive arrival in the world of art. In San Domenico Maggiore over 100 works, some of them important, with monotypes from the Maison Tellier series, original monotypes of the cardinal family by Degas, printed by Ambroise Vollard, and many facsimile drawings from Ludovic Halévy’s Carnet, two partly valuable sculptures, engravings, paintings and Drawings depicting ballerinas. You won’t be missing either reproductions and projections to show visitors the personal and artistic biography of the French painter and sculptor.
The grandfather’s portrait is also on display Rene Hilaire DeGasmade during his stay in Naples, and also Photographs of the family palace in Naples with a section dedicated to Degas’ passion for photography, with photos by Bibliotheque Nationale de France.
