An appeal to Pope Francis to stop the destruction started by Russia and thanks to the Italian government for their support awaiting the visit of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. These are two of the topics addressed by the head of Ukraine’s Presidential Office in Kyiv, Andriy Yermak, on Sky TG24 during the interview with Michele Cagiano (FULL VIDEO OF THE INTERVIEW). Regarding the situation on the ground, he explains: “The battle of Soledar is not over yet, as the Russians say. Very difficult situation, we keep fighting. We still need weapons.” And on peace talks with Russia: “They are not ongoing” (WAR IN UKRAINE, LIVE UPDATES).

Let’s talk about the situation on the pitch. On the Donetsk front, the Russians fight for victory between Wagner and the Ministry of Defense. But what is Soledar really like?

At the moment we haven’t reached the city of Donetsk, we will and we will liberate the whole region. We fight now, the battle of Soledar is not over as the Russians say and it goes on just as it goes on in Bhakmut. Our soldiers, our heroes, remain steadfast, the situation is difficult, the fighting is bloody.

Where are we today with the war? The latest news speak of bomb attacks in Kyiv and in the Zaporizhia region.

We can already hear the air raid sirens, the situation across the country is very difficult. Russian missiles are hitting our infrastructure, there are constant attacks on our citizens’ homes. On New Year’s Eve, the Russians fired over 200 Iranian missiles and drones at Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv. This is proof that the enemy wants to intimidate us, intimidate our citizens and leave us without electricity and water. Despite everything, the Ukrainians continue to fight, we are not intimidated, citizens are returning to their homes after the air strikes. Unfortunately, the war goes on without end.

NATO Secretary Stoltenberg has announced that stockpiles of weapons to be sent to Kyiv have been exhausted, but production will resume. What weapons do you need the most today? What do you think of the international aid that has reached Ukraine?

I know that support from the international community will increase: the United States, the United Kingdom, Poland, France and even Italy are on our side, they know the war is not over yet. We still need support with equipment, ammunition and tanks. Today, Russia has an advantage in terms of the number of soldiers and military equipment. I believe that there will be crucial battles in the coming months that will be crucial to ultimate victory. We need support for that.

Prime Minister Meloni said she was ready to guarantee a peace deal, a hypothesis Moscow immediately dismissed. Meloni also announced plans to travel to Kyiv before the end of February. What do you think? How is your relationship with the new Italian government led by Meloni?

It is important that Italy supports Ukraine. It all started with former Prime Minister Draghi and we are happy to see that the new Meloni government is continuing this work. We have heard many pro-Ukrainian statements from Meloni. We therefore thank you for what has been done and what will be done in the coming months. We are of course looking forward to Giorgia Meloni’s visit to Kyiv and I think Italy could be one of the countries that will lead Ukraine to victory. I don’t care what Russia thinks about Italy’s guarantor role, I am confident that Italy will stand by us, continue to support us and help us implement our President Zelenskyy’s ten-point peace plan.

An EU-Ukraine summit has been convened for February 3rd. What do you expect from this meeting? What is Ukraine asking for?

As a candidate country, relations between Ukraine and the European Union are becoming ever closer. And that is why we are counting on Europe’s support at such a difficult time for us. A recovery plan must be implemented to ensure our infrastructure is restored. I am sure that Ukraine will be part of the European family very soon and we will do our best to fulfill all the necessary requirements and recommendations.

Pope Francis also calls for peace, who a few months ago also spoke of the hypothesis of a mediation trip between the two countries that would reach both Moscow and Kyiv. What do you think? Do you think it could be useful?

We value all peace initiatives, including those put forward by the Pope. I believe that Russia needs to end the war, it’s up to them to end the conflict: they’re killing civilians, destroying our infrastructure. I have also discussed this with Cardinal Parolin, I thank him for his commitment. I think it’s time for the Pope to visit Ukraine and give a very clear signal that it is Russia that needs to stop what it has started, withdrawing its troops from Ukraine to stop the destruction to stop. Then we look forward to the visit of Pope Francis, his trip would be a very important contribution to the end of the war. As for your visit to Moscow, I think it will only be useful if you return from Moscow with some results: Russia’s decision to end the war. But it all depends on Russia.

Almost a year has passed since the beginning of the conflict. You negotiated some important issues directly with the Russians. Are peace negotiations still possible? What’s next?

There are currently no ongoing peace negotiations, there are dialogues on prisoner exchanges and wheat mediated by Turkey and the United Nations. Our terms are clear: Our vision is outlined in Zelensky’s Ten Point Peace Plan. I know that many countries in the international community stand with us, many leaders support Ukraine and are ready to play a fundamental role in ensuring that one or more points of the plan are implemented in order to achieve peace.
