Some may have gotten a chuckle at the notion that former Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury plans to live in Thailand or wherever with Michael Bidwill’s money while ignoring opportunities to work as an offensive coordinator for another team . Bidwill may be laughing for another reason.
The payout a coach receives when fired without reason usually comes with a significant condition attached. In particular, the coach cannot just sit back and rake in the money he would have earned without trying to make some money elsewhere. There is an obligation to seek and accept alternative employment.
The last question is the wording of the contract. But other coaching contracts contain phrases like this: “The coach has an express obligation to seek employment upon such involuntary termination.”
So maybe Kliff should be a little more discreet when bragging about his plans. It’s one thing for Bidwill to be chasing Kingsbury around to ensure he meets his obligation to find another job and to try his best to reduce his takeover by being hired elsewhere as a manager. It’s quite another when Kingsbury flaunts the fact that he’s being paid millions by Bidwill to do nothing.
Which, based on yesterday’s reporting, he appears to be doing.
