As one of the biggest horror hits of the past year, X has been acclaimed by critics and fans alike. So much so that in the same year the presequel entitled Pearl (also confirmed in Brazil) was released and in 2023 it will be the turn of MaXXXine, the third part of this trilogy written and directed by Ti West. Amazon achieves a milestone by exclusively bringing to its platform this highly regarded production, which has been one of the most talked about films in recent times. The story, produced by A24, features a group of young people who are part of a porn film crew. The backdrop is the farm of an elderly couple who have no idea what kind of film they are making. But when they find out… In the cast, Mia Goth is the one to put on a show and the film also features the teenage muse of the moment, Jenna Ortega.
Speaking of popular and muchhyped horror films on the internet, 2022 also brought the extremely violent and explicit Terrifier 2, which chronicles the torture and sadism of the already iconic clown art. The film was so successful that Imagem Films bought the rights and brought it to Brazilian cinemas. But what even the most observant fan and lover of the genre didn’t know was where the heck Art came from and what Terrifier was, since the first film went a total blank. But Amazon solves this problem by making the original 2016 film available in its collection, here titled Terrifying.
You know that useless movie story? The first A Órfã (2009) became a cult success right after its release, revealed to the world the talent of the girl Isabelle Fuhrman and the director Jaume ColletSerra and also delivered one of the best and most commented plot twists in the history of cinema, everything based on a chillingly real storyline many even claimed the film stuck to its twist. Jokes aside, once that weirdness of seeing an adult live as a child is over (if you can get over it), the film even delivers what the fans want.

2022 was arguably the best year of recent seasons for horror. One of the best that almost no one has seen is this independent work from the Sundance Festival. But Amazon is poised to change that and add the film to its current film library in hopes that more fans will be able to see this acclaimed film. With an 89% approval rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics, the film stars Anna Diop (who lives as the heroine Estelar in the Titans series) as a Senegalese immigrant seeking a better life in the United States. She takes a job as a nanny for a wealthy white family, but hopes one day to bring her own son to the country. Produced by Blumhouse, this is another example of the subgenre called social horror, mixing reallife traumatic events with supernatural experiences.
Another production that carries its social message and uses it as a metaphor in its narrative. This is women’s struggle against abuse, toxic masculinity and machismo. The protagonist is the gigantic Ella Balinska, 1.80 m tall, known for her roles in As Panteras (2019) and in the Netflix series Resident Evil. She plays a woman who agrees to go on a blind date that not only ends terribly badly, but now she has to fight desperately to get out alive. This is another Blumhouse production similar to Sundance.
Naomi Watts stars in this Amazon Original production, which is a remake of a 2014 Austrian cult film. In the plot, two little twin brothers begin to suspect that their mother isn’t really who she says she is after recovering from cosmetic surgery on her face, causing her to use a mask for a better and faster recovery. It wasn’t enough for the little ones not to be able to see their mother’s full face, the matriarch’s behavior grows increasingly strange for the children, who suspect that something may be very wrong behind the return of “mama”.
One of the best and most underrated horror films of recent years, the new Candyman works great both as a homage to the 1992 classic and as a standalone film that’s spooky, gory and full of room for its social criticism, particularly the racism ingrained within of society. It’s not for nothing that we have Jordan Peele’s finger as a screenwriter and producer. The Candyman has always been the pure analogy for racism, and in this new film, that element is made even clearer by catching his eye. It’s just a beautiful film, both aesthetically in its looks and in its message.
Horror fans are looking forward to the premiere of the critically acclaimed M3GAN, which has already been released abroad and hits Brazilian cinemas on November 19th. While they wait for the killer robot puppet movie, fans can turn their engines to Amazon with this Nightmare in the Heights starring M3GAN and Get Out! (2017). Here she lives a much more real, identifiable, and much more chilling terror. Imagine the nightmare of a young couple traveling in a singleengine airplane to a tropical island wedding when its pilot suffers a heart attack, leaving the protagonist and her partner in the worst possible situation to fend for themselves care for everyone.
This horror marked the directorial debut of actor Dave Franco, younger brother of James Franco. Dave also casts his real life girlfriend Alison Brie. Two couples who are friends are renting a beautiful paradise house with a view of the sea on the property. What was supposed to be a fun and celebratory weekend soon turns to paranoia and suspicion when they believe the guy who rented the house might be spying on them. The cast is rounded out by Dan Stevens, Jeremy Allen White (from the hit series The Bear) and Sheila Vand (from the cult horror Dark Girl Walks Through the Night).
This is a tip for those who want to enjoy Friday the 13th but prefer a slightly lighter movie.
