Venezuelan President Defends Regional ‘Political Union’ With Caribbean; discussed proposal with Argentina and Colombia
The President of Venezuela, Nicholas Madurohe said on Thursday (January 12, 2023) during a speech to the National Assembly that he spoke by phone with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) about the creation of a bloc between Latin American and Caribbean countries.
In his speech, the Venezuelan leader defended the political and economic union between the countries of the regions.
“A new time is coming, a special time to unite the efforts and ways of the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean to advance in the formation of a powerful bloc of political forces, a powerful bloc of economic power that speaks to the people of the world,” declared he. Maduro also said he had spoken to the Presidents of Argentina Alberto Fernández and Colombia Gustavo Petro about the possible bloc. The Venezuelan also quoted Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping as calling them “big brothers”.

The Venezuelan President also commented on acts of vandalism by rightwing extremists in Three Powers Square on January 8th. Maduro explained that “Brasília endured three hours of neofascist insurgency.” According to him, the opposition wants to “take over” his government [a Venezuela] to a civil war like the ones they want to lead to Brazil.”
