“Martin Luther King’s dream has not yet been fulfilled,” and for this reason it is necessary to continue to choose and fight for democracy at this “tipping point” for the United States and the world. Joe Biden pays tribute to the civil rights activist on his 94th birthday. He does it from the Ebenezer Baptist Church, the church in Atlanta where the reverend preached.
The President flies to Georgia in an attempt to at least temporarily forget the scandal surrounding the secret papers found in one of his former offices and home in Delaware. “I’ve spoken before queens and heads of state, but I’ve never felt more intimidated than I did before you,” said Biden, the first sitting president to attend Sunday mass at the famous church. He reminds those present that alongside Bob Kennedy, Luther King was always his hero. “I admired John Kennedy, but I couldn’t imagine him sitting at my table, but Bob did,” he says, eliciting a laugh from the faithful in attendance.
“I am here with you at a pivotal moment for the United States and the world. What will happen in the next few years will determine what the world will be like three decades from now,” observes Biden, who is returning to ride one of the strengths of the US Democrats during the midterm election mandate or the defense of democracy.
“This is a decision moment” and it is necessary to “choose democracy over autocracy. We must fight for the soul of the country” against those who promote “racism, extremism and insurgency,” reiterates the president, who describes Martin Luther King as “a nonviolent fighter who fought for justice.”
“He showed us the way and now we have to be careful.
We must follow him,” is Biden’s admonition, who is convinced that following the path leads to the defense and nurturing of democracy, which he adds is “not assured” or guaranteed. The civil rights leader – watching the President – said, “Where do we go from here? My message to the country is let’s move forward together.” For Biden, the trip to Atalanta is an opportunity to strengthen and deepen the close bond between the African American community and Democrats, even as the 2024 election sees that could candidate president again.
