David O. Russell’s latest film has finally come into focus, revealing the title ‘Amsterdam’ and a November 4 release date at CinemaCon.
Directed by John David Washington, Margot Robbie and Christian Bale, the historical play has been described as an “original romantic crime epic,” according to Disney executive Tony Chambers, who presented the film to the American Cinema Owners’ Congress on Wednesday.
Released under the 20th Century Studios label, little is known about the Silver Linings Playbook and The Fighter director’s project other than its expansive cast – which includes Taylor Swift, Chris Rock, Zoe Saldana, Michael Shannon and Robert De stainless steel
“Amsterdam” occupies a whimsical and mysterious world in the 1930s, in which the leading trio of Bale, Robbie and Washington “find themselves at the center of one of the most secretive conspiracies in American history”.
With jiggling facial scars and wild hair, Bale’s character looks a lot softer than the gritty characters Russell usually likes to play with. A brunette Robbie and Washington in a suit round out the trio nicely as they face escalating danger (and plenty of booze and dancing).
Swift emerges as a grieving daughter and bursts into tears in front of her father’s body as Rock looks on.
“You have a dead white man in a box. It’s not even a coffin, it doesn’t have a lid,” Rock says while Swift sobs. “You know who’s going to get in trouble? The black men.”
Other cast members include Timothy Olyphant, Alessandro Nivola, Matthias Schoenaerts, Andrea Riseborough and Mike Myers.
