Amidst a widespread anti-corruption campaign in Vietnam, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc resigned. Phuc “tendered his resignation from the posts assigned to him, stepped down and retired,” state news agency VNA reported today. For days there were rumors about his imminent release.
Two deputy heads of government and some ministers have already been sacked as part of the anti-corruption campaign, and dozens of top officials have been arrested. Phuc has now taken responsibility for its “violations and errors, which had very serious consequences”, the VNA reported.
Nguyen was in charge of the communist-led Southeast Asia state in 2021. Prior to that, he had been Prime Minister since 2016.
