In the EU corruption scandal, alleged mastermind Pier Antonio Panzeri promised comprehensive cooperation with the Belgian judiciary. As announced by the public prosecutor responsible in Brussels, the former deputy signed a corresponding agreement today. In return, your sentence will be reduced.
According to the Belgian Public Prosecutor’s Office, Panzeri faces a prison sentence, fine and confiscation of around one million euros. The former deputy is currently in custody in Belgium, along with three other suspects. During a December search, investigators found €600,000 in cash in Panzeri.
According to Belgian newspaper Le Soir, Francesco Giorgi, a member of parliament who is also in custody, accused Panzeri of being the head of an alleged organization used by Qatar and Morocco to meddle in European affairs. Among those arrested is the former vice-president of the European Parliament, Eva Kaili. She must be heard again by the magistrate on Thursday.
