According to local press reports, on April 18, after lunch, the couple went to Amarapuri Temple because the girl wanted to introduce her future husband to her friends. When she reached the top of the hill, the 22-year-old blindfolded her boyfriend with a scarf on the pretense of showing him the gift. Instead of the gift, the girl pulled a knife and cut his throat because, according to the police, “she didn’t want to marry this boy or anyone else.” She was charged with attempted murder and is now in custody, facing up to ten years in prison if convicted. Meanwhile, the couple’s parents blame each other for the accident.
