Set in 1952 in the small town of Enniscorthy, the film follows Eilis Lacey, a shy young girl whose life in troubled Ireland leads her to dream of a brighter future on the other side of the world. Her older sister Rose (Fiona Glascott) decides to help her by arranging a trip to the United States. Ellis leaves and arrives in Brooklyn, where many Irish immigrants live; Here he finds accommodation at Madge Kehoe’s (Julie Walters) boarding house and begins working in a department store. But his family is so homesick that Ellis keeps thinking about giving up everything and going home.

Brooklyn: the plot of the film

At some point, Ellis meets Tony (Emory Cohen), an Italian plumber who falls madly in love with her. Thanks to the young immigrant, the girl feels more comfortable in New York, but just as she seems to be beginning a new and happy chapter in her life, the unexpected death of her sister Rose brings her back to Ireland and, before secretly marrying her boyfriend, accepts her. Back in her homeland, a series of events seems to mean that Ellis will never return to America, forcing the young woman to make a decision that could change her future forever.

Brooklyn is a touching melodrama based on a screenplay by Nick Hornby, which uses simple language (but at the same time direct and emotional) to stage the transition of its protagonist from girl to woman. The latter is skillfully played by the exceptional actress Saoirse Ronanwho – for the role of Ellis Lacey – received a Golden Globe nomination and an Academy Award nomination in 2016!
