“There is no story. Forty democracies organized against Russia. It is obvious who is stronger in the long run. Economically, militarily and strategically. It’s not about humiliating the future losers,” said Severgnini, who emphasizes the importance of making Putin understand that the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine can only lead to disaster for everyone. “I think that Putin himself will think about it not once, but a thousand times before giving the order to use a tactical nuclear weapon – the journalist emphasizes. It is possible that his order will not be carried out because it takes more people to press that button and everyone knows what the consequences would be, even for Russia.” If this scenario were to materialize, the Russian President would understand that he is finished and even the Russian hierarchical system of government may no longer be able to withstand it. So diplomacy and a halt to threats, including those from the United States and Britain, which only “harden” relations between Ukraine and Russia. “There are risks, and it is true that the war has changed and a compromise has to be found somehow. However, this constant resort to the threat of nuclear weapons by Putin and Lavrov is a sign of their desperation,” he concludes.
