James Cameron Fires Jake Sully As Avatar's Narrator And Announces New Narrator For Each Sequel

Avatar: The Way Of Water is about to surpass the $2 billion mark despite being part of a culturally insignificant franchise with many memories. As promised by James Cameron, he would round out the series with three more films should anyone show up for their second Pandorian vacation. Now the culture that routinely rejects Cameron’s visions is staring at three more sequels.

Although the filmmaker says Avatar 3 is “in the can” and has entered post-production, we don’t know much about it. For now, all that is public is that the film introduces Fire Na’vi as the series moves from the forest plane to the water plane to the fire plane, like Link adventuring through various Hyrulian temples. Unlike Zelda, the perspective changes with each film.

On the Soundtracking With Edith Bowman podcast, Cameron revealed that he had fired Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) as Avatar’s standard narrator. After two films with Sully’s soft tones taking us from the top of the Hallelujah Mountains to the pools of Awa’atlu, Sully’s eldest son Lo’ak (Britain Dalton) takes the reins. That’s what people want.

“I’m going to take a moment, when the dust clears, to assess what people loved and responded to most in this current version, and then I can go back and tinker a little,” Cameron said of Avatar 3. “We can go back and do a few moments here and there. It won’t be radical, but maybe refine it a bit to emphasize what people are responding to.”

“Lo’ak really grew into a character that people became friends with,” Cameron continued. “So I might find ways to – he’s already the narrator. I’m giving something away here, but that’s OK. I think it could be fascinating for people to think about what’s coming.”

But while Lo’ak is the Na’vi of now, tomorrow is a different story. Cameron says a narrative change will go into effect for the remaining three films. “Jake was our voiceover narrator for film one and film two, and we have a different narrator for each of the following films. We see it through the eyes of another character. Movie three is through Lo’ak’s eyes.”

While we all love Lo’ak and applaud his development, we can only hope that movie four will finally give us what we want: a full movie of Payakan’s POV. We look forward to hearing Payakan’s words if it’s not too painful.
