For her birthday, Barbara asks for help in… Concrete

Last week the pralboinese Barbara Bertocchi he celebrated his birthday and gave away a sack of cement: his wish may seem unusual, but it is not. In fact, these bags are used for a great and wonderful project: building “Glimmer of Hope”a free mixed private school for boys and girls aged 6 to 10 to be implemented in Pakistan.

From Greece to the Balkans, initiatives of this nature are not new to Barbara. The great heart of the Pralboinese has made it as far as Pakistan, to a village on the border with Afghanistan, where I lived for a little over two months work started for building the school. For several years, Barbara has been helping migrants stationed in the hotspots of the Greek island of Lesvos and those facing the Balkan route in the area of Bihac and Velika Kladusa with the «One Family at a Time» project on the militarization border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia.

“In small villages near the mountains, boys have three choices: walk for hours early in the morning to the nearest public school, pay tuition for a private school, or don’t go to school,” Barbara explained. For the girls, on the other hand, the options are narrowed down to two: paying for a private school or giving up their education because they are not allowed to attend public institutions in small villages. Like this from a little girl’s desire whose families cannot afford the school fees, the idea of wanting to do more was born».

«Light of Hope» will be a free mixed private school for boys and girls aged 6 to 10 years It will accommodate around 80 students. There will be five classrooms, one for each school year, plus one for teachers. Students can run workshops, lunches are shared and there are female teachers who can’t wait to get started, supported by new graduates in their first experiences. They learn writing, reading, arithmetic, natural sciences, geography, world history and English as well as gardening. “The construction work is progressing rapidly. Many donations have already arrived!” concluded Barbara. In Pakistan, a sack of cement costs 990 PKR, about 4.50 euros.
