A 10-year-old boy from Oregon state decided to speak before a city council to denounce the racism he had suffered.
His intervention came days after a dead raccoon was found outside the mayor’s office with a message addressed to a black councilman. The post was aimed at the first and only black city councilman in Redmond, a majority-white city of 36,000 people. The police investigation is ongoing, the New York Post reported.
When he learned his parents wanted to attend the city council meeting to support Councilman Gavin Alston, a fourth-year student decided to do something.
Last Tuesday he appeared to denounce racism. The 10-year-old boy read a speech he had written the day before. Despite his young age, Gavin Alston already regrets many racist gestures made against him.
“A lot of people called me the N-word or called me a monkey,” he said. A girl once said to me, “I would hit you, but that would be considered animal cruelty.”
Addressing the majority-white assembly, the student called for elected officials to be held accountable for the situation and also called for change.
“Why should we black people suffer from racism when there are other races that kill,” he wondered. If we black people show respect, we still get treated like crap.”
“This is not how we should be treated,” the child added. We should be treated equally. It’s not fair to us black people.
