Those injured in the attack on High School No. 5 were taken to hospital, with one of them – a boy – reportedly in serious condition in intensive care.

The Mash news agency reportedly published a photo of the dead gunman, dressed all in black, lying on the ground next to a pool of blood and a shotgun.

She was also said to have been armed with a hunting knife.

The photo appeared to show a long-handled knife stuck in her right boot.

Other images showed blood splatters on the floor among scattered chairs, desks and a shotgun shell.

The suspected shooter was also pictured in what appeared to be a school photo. While her face was blurred, it showed her as a blonde in a white school shirt.

Russian officials confirmed the attack.

“According to preliminary investigative data, a 14-year-old girl brought a pump-action shotgun to school with which she shot at her classmates,” the Russian Investigative Committee said in a statement.

“The incident left two people dead (one of them was the shooter), five were injured and have now been taken to a medical facility.”

Investigators are working to determine the motive, the statement said, and it is understood a murder investigation has been opened.

The students were evacuated from the school. Supposedly there were shots taken outside today that show them grouped together outside in the snow.

“Five children were injured, two of them were slightly injured, three of them were moderately injured, all of them were taken to the regional children’s hospital.”

“You will receive the help you need.” All operational services are on site.

Bryansk borders Ukraine and the school is about 65 miles from the border.

Weapons are normally subject to strict controls in Russia, but Bryansk is one of several southern regions that have seen cross-border attacks during the war with Ukraine and where Moscow has encouraged the formation of self-defense units.

There have been several school shootings in Russia in recent years.

In 2018, an 18-year-old student killed 20 people, mostly fellow students, in a mass shooting at a college in Russian-occupied Crimea, which Moscow seized from Ukraine in 2014.

In 2021, a 19-year-old gunman killed nine people at a school in Kazan, Tatarstan. That same year, a teenager killed six people at a university in the Ural city of Perm.

And in September last year, a gunman with a swastika on his T-shirt killed 15 people, including 11 children, and wounded 24 at a school in Izhevsk where he had once been a student, then committed suicide, investigators said.
