The death of a young woman sparks outrage in Martinique. A 22-year-old man has been charged with the murder of his girlfriend and taken into custody in Fort-de-France, the public prosecutor's office said on Friday, February 16.

The young man confessed to being the author of the shot that fatally hit the 22-year-old victim in the face on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday. However, he maintains “that it is an accident, that it is completely involuntary,” clarified Clarisse Taron, prosecutor of Fort-de-France.

This version did not convince the investigating judge in charge of the case, who considered that “there were serious and consistent indications so that he shot in front of the deceased victim.” The justice system relies on the testimony of a friend of the victim who was present in the apartment and called for help.

“A Valentine’s Day full of horror”

On the advice of his mother, the man went to the Fort-de-France police station late on Wednesday afternoon. He is known to the police and the courts and was sentenced to eight months in prison in 2023 for carrying a category C weapon. This is the third murder committed in Martinique since the beginning of the year, the first murder of women.

The Martinique Women's Union condemned on Wednesday “a Valentine's Day of horror.” “She was murdered because she is a woman,” protested Culture Equality, another feminist association from Martinica.
