A 46-year-old man has died of burns and smoke inhalation in a fire at a house in Cañada Real Galiana, in the sixth sector of that area, that developed on Thursday afternoon. Another injured with second-degree burns to the face and neck who was transferred to the fire department at Getafe University Hospital, and a 66-year-old woman with minor damage from smoke inhalation to Infanta Leonor Hospital. Three other men, aged 30, 32 and 68, were treated for smoke inhalation by the Samur but were released at the scene after being given oxygen.
The Madrid fire brigade extinguished the fire, which had a large smoke load in the house. The National Police have taken over the investigation to find out the causes of the fire, which have yet to be determined, and the Municipal Police, who have approached the site, have facilitated access to the area.
The fire brigade corporal, Jesús García, stated that “the fire developed and affected the entrance of the house, making it difficult to access and penetrate inside the house. “The troops finally entered the house through the windows to search for the victims and get them out as quickly as possible. The house was heavy with smoke, the fire chief said, which also made it difficult to find the 46-year-old man, who died in the fire. The man was in cardiac arrest and after he was removed from the home, Samur services performed CPR on him for five minutes, but eventually confirmed his death.
The fire happened after more than 900 days had passed without residents having electricity, despite various organizations including the Council of Europe urging Spain to provide light and heating for its residents. It is the longest power outage in the West in decades. The area is full of settlements, sometimes living in buildings like shacks. The Ombudsman also called for special municipal planning licenses to be issued for power supplies ahead of the start of last winter, one of the coldest times for Cañada Real residents. Located in this area, on the old cattle route, 17 kilometers south-east of central Madrid. Sector 6, the southernmost, lies between the Valencia motorway and the border with Getafe.
