A brand new First Nations zone at the 18th Salon des Artisans – Le Journal de Québec

The 18the The Salon des artisans at the Center de foires de Québec will feature the new First Nations Zone, where visitors can discover artisans from the province’s 11 indigenous nations.

For Nancy Picard, artisan and area manager, it was important to give each of them the opportunity to display their creations in the same space.

“Many come from remote communities and cannot afford to rent a kiosk. They make so many beautiful things, so we need to give them the opportunity to sell them,” explains Ms. Picard.

Nancy Picard, proud representative of the Huron-Wendat Nation, believes it is important to include some First Nations people, especially in times of reconciliation.

“We have to be there, but together. We must not replace anyone, but simply take our place together. We need to support artisans who don’t have the opportunity to be here for ten days. People welcome us with open arms.”

A meaningful gesture

Always aware of everything that affects her people, Nancy Picard was thrilled to have seen Minnesota Wild goaltender Marc-André Fleury with his mask specially painted as a tribute to the First Nations.

Last week, Fleury wore that piece of gear while warming up before a game in their honor, despite receiving a warning from the NHL not to do so. His gesture did not go unnoticed in the various communities. The Quebec goalie had no use for threats of fines from the NHL.

“I would have loved to have this beautiful mask here in our area. I wish I had had the opportunity to talk to our friend and tell him. “What he did out of conviction is important and significant,” added Nancy Picard.

A special day

With this in mind, First Nations Day will take place on Saturday, December 9th. The first 500 visitors will receive a free ticket to the Onhwa’ Lumina enchanted night path.

The Salon des artisans de Québec returns to the Center de foires from December 1st to 10th. The arts and crafts event attracts around fifty new artisans to the location.

Since 2005, the Salon des artisans de Québec has featured more than 200 artists dedicated to their art.

This free excursion is an opportunity to find 100% local Christmas gifts.
