The industrial area of Meyrin-Satigny is currently the scene of a major fire whose smoke can be seen throughout the canton of Geneva. In addition, a stench of burnt plastic permeated the entire town of Satigny.
According to our information, the fire could have started at the “Grimper.ch” climbing garden, which one of its managers denies. At 5:45 p.m., firefighters were still trying to contain the fire, particularly in the large adjacent five-story parking garage.
According to Cointrin management, the fire, which was located on one of the approach lanes of Geneva airport, did not disrupt air traffic.
A new building
“The fire broke out around 4 p.m.,” says a reader who watched the sad spectacle from the Satigny nursery.
“I live across the street and just after 4 p.m. I saw flames coming out of the middle of the building, on the Jura side where the climbing room is,” says Anne Revaclier, Satigny’s board member responsible for safety. The structures started to bend and then everything collapsed. It’s crazy. The building is new but was completed about two years ago.
