An insulated backpack on the steps of a building in the Bronx. A forgotten item? stolen? No, a cruel abandonment of an animal. Yes, because two small gray ears are sticking out of the backpack: there was a cat inside.
To notice a woman walking in the area who luckily for the cat didn’t walk straight ahead but came over and unzipped. Inside was a cat, a cat suffering from a bad cold and one eye of which was in such bad condition that it had to be removed. Luckily, Pixie, as she was known, was quickly placed in the care of Little Wanderers, an organization that rescues cats in need in and around New York City.
“It’s unusual for a super friendly stray cat to jump out of a bag,” Little Wanderers co-founder Lisa Scroggins tells The Dodo.
Pixie isn’t just friendly – she’s affectionate and playful, purring all the time as if to show all her joy at being out of the backpack and back with people. “She’s got a doll face made out of sugar love cupcakes,” Scroggins said.
In a miraculous show of support, organizations banded together to ensure Pixie’s speedy recovery.
Given her story, several organizations came together to help her: the Animal Medical Center intervened to solve the eye problem and unfortunately eliminated it, while the Feline Veterinary Medical Center provided basic veterinary care.
And the icing on the cake came very quickly: a few weeks later, Pixie found a family and a home of her own, where she also met a mouse brother. The perfect happy ending to a story with a difficult beginning.
