A driver who was fleeing from police was finally intercepted a few meters from the Sûreté du Québec police station in Rivière-du-Loup at around 4 p.m. on November 2nd. This is the second pursuit of more than 50 kilometers in 24 hours in the KRTB region.
A motorist was stopped by a police officer to check his driving status after questionable maneuvers on Route 132 West in Trois-Pistoles around 3:30 p.m. and refused to stop his vehicle even though his flashing lights were activated.
Therefore, criminal proceedings were initiated. Several teams from the Sureté du Québec were mobilized to try to stop the suspect, who was driving at high speed. “When he escaped, the driver […] committed several traffic violations,” explains SQ PR officer Eve Brochu-Joubert.
Patrol officers pursued the car from a distance in L’Isle-Verte and Saint-Arsène, while others waited for the car at key locations. They lost sight of him as he entered Rivière-du-Loup. However, a few minutes later he was located under the railway bridge in the Saint-Ludger district.
The perpetrator, about forty years old, from Rimouski, was detained at the intersection of Saint-Magloire and Saint-Elzéar streets, not far from the police station, particularly because of the traffic associated with returning schoolchildren.
Since the police intervention affected traffic in the area, the suspect’s vehicle was taken to the Carré Dubé parking lot, where police carried out a search.
According to the SQ spokesman, the driver could face charges of escape and dangerous driving in connection with the event. “There was no impact or injuries, but the driver was taken to hospital to have his health checked,” she concluded.
