Slain by one of the most venomous animals in the world. A 7-year-old boy died in Brazil on October 25, two days after he was stung by a scorpion at a campsite in São Paulo state where he was staying with his parents.

“As soon as he put his shoe on, he cried out in pain”

According to La Dépêche, which picks up information from Brazilian media outlet O Globo, the dangerous arthropod was hiding in one of the little boy’s shoes. Applying the latter, little Luiz Miguel Furtado Barbosa received the fatal stab.

“As soon as he put it on, he cried out in pain,” says the victim’s mother, quoted by La Dépêche. Since we couldn’t find what had bitten him, we kept looking. But his leg started getting red and he said the pain was increasing.”

Seven cardiac arrests in less than 48 hours

In a panic, the parents immediately took their child to the hospital. Unfortunately, despite the injection of antidote, the little boy’s condition did not improve, quite the opposite. After no less than seven cardiac arrests in just under 48 hours, Luiz Miguel Furtado Barbosa finally died on October 25 at the age of 7.

Before taking their child to the hospital, the deceased’s parents also found the animal that had bitten him. It is therefore a scorpion of the Tityus serrulatus type, a species endemic to Brazil, which grows between 6 and 8 centimeters in length and is one of the most venomous scorpions in the world. According to La Dépêche, he is also known for “being responsible for thousands of deaths in the country”.
