A compendium of literary recommendations on Page Two and four

A compendium of literary recommendations on “Page Two” and four other suggestions you can see on TV today

On this day you can enjoy two excellent films: on TCM Eyes Wide Shut, a cinematic testament by Stanley Kubrick, and on SOMOS Guantanamera, a cheerful comedy wrapped in social criticism by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea. La 2 broadcasts its usual appointment with Página Dos, where the literary program offers a selection of good readings for these holidays. In Cuatro, the participants of “In Search of Nirvana” continue their journey through Nepal.

'Eyes wide closed'

2:35 p.m., TCM

“Eyes Wide Shut” by Stanley Kubrick

USA-UK, 1999 (153 minutes). Director: Stanley Kubrick. Actors: Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Sydney Pollack.

Stanley Kubrick's latest film slides into the bitter underground life of a seemingly exemplary middle-class couple. A lethargic marriage where ghosts sleep, needing just a spark to manifest themselves in the form of fear. Kubrick spent more than two years filming Eyes Wide Shut. The result is a flood of images of unprecedented perfection, of unimaginable depth. The best possible cinematic testimony of a filmmaker who is as visionary as he is thoughtful, as precise as he is pessimistic.

Marathon of the “Gold Route with Parker Schnabel”

5:15 p.m., Discovery Channel

“The Gold Route” with Parker Schnabel, aired on Discovery Channel

During the Christmas Day after-dinner session, a marathon of the documentary series The Gold Route with Parker Schnabel arrives on Discovery. An afternoon full of adventure thanks to a trip with the popular television miner. On this occasion he will reach the jungles of Guyana, where he will have to overcome various dangers to get his precious mineral and also pay tribute to his grandfather and mentor.

“Guantanamera”

10/18, WE ARE

Guantanamera, by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea

Cuba-Spain, 1994 (102 minutes). Director: Tomás Gutierrez Alea. Cast: Jorge Perugorría, Mirta Ibarra, Carlos Cruz.

A social satire wrapped in a romantic comedy. Or a love story that accompanies a political portrait. Guantanamera combines both intentions. It is a film as entertaining as it is critical, in which a truck and a funeral procession share the journey and adventures of an economical government plan to transport the dead.

Books for Christmas, on “Page 2”

6:30 p.m., La 2

Óscar López, director and presenter of Página Dos on La 2

The Página Dos team has prepared a selection of 15 readings to immerse yourself in culture this holiday season. Various works with current speeches or classic arguments. Among them, novels such as “First Blood” by Amélie Nothomb, “The Wide World” by Pierre Lemaitre and “Watch Us Dance” by Leila Slimani stand out. Also a book of stories such as “The Last Dream” by Pedro Almodóvar, the collection of stories, poems and fables “Where the Chameleon Flies” by Ida Vitale and an autobiographical novel such as “Construction Material” by Eider Rodríguez

The adventures in Nepal continue

23.05, four

Looking for Nirvana, broadcast on Cuatro

The “In Search of Nirvana” competition presents its participants with new challenges on their journey through Nepal.
