A Comprehensive List of Tech Layoffs in 2023

Last year’s tech-wide reckoning continues. In 2023, layoffs have again cost tens of thousands of tech workers their jobs; This time, the downsizing was driven by the biggest names in tech, including Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Yahoo and Zoom. Startups have also announced cutbacks in every sector, from crypto to enterprise SaaS.

The reasons for these downsizing follow a common script, citing the macroeconomic environment and the need to find discipline on a tumultuous path to profitability. Still, tracking the layoffs helps us understand the impact on innovation, which companies are under severe pressure, and who can be hired for the fortunate companies that are growing. It also unfortunately serves as a reminder of the human impact of layoffs and how risk profiles can change from here.

March 2023

roku

Announced on March 30 that it would lay off about 200 employees, or 6% of its workforce. The company laid off 200 US employees in November.

university

Announced on March 30 that it had laid off more than 350 jobs, or 12% of its workforce — just over four months after cutting about 350 jobs in November.

Clear

Announced on March 28 that 1,300 employees, or 18% of the workforce, would be laid off by the end of the second quarter of 2023.

GitHub

Announced on March 28 that it had eliminated over 100 jobs in the South Asian market and laid off virtually its entire engineering team in India. A GitHub spokesperson told TechCrunch that the layoff is part of a streamlining effort the company announced in February to cut about 10% of its workforce by the end of the first quarter of 2023.

Disney

On March 27, Disney announced in an internal memo to employees that there will be three rounds of layoffs, the first of which begins this week. The job cuts will affect around 7,000 employees, as announced in February.

Foreclosure

On March 24, Bloomberg reported that more layoffs could be imminent at Salesforce, citing Chief Operating Officer Brian Millham as suggesting the company could be contributing to ongoing downsizing at the CRM leader and in the tech space more generally. If there are layoffs, that would come on top of January’s 10% cut.

Accenture

Announced on March 23 that it plans to cut 19,000 jobs, or 2.5% of its workforce.

As a matter of fact

Announced on March 22 that it would lay off 2,200 employees, or 15% of its workforce.

Announced on March 22 that it had laid off 27% of its staff, about 100 employees.

Pull out

Announced on March 20 to lay off 400 employees.

Amazon

Another round of large-scale layoffs was announced on March 20, this time 9,000 people will lose their jobs. TechCrunch hears about 10% of today’s total comes from AWS. As part of the new round of layoffs, Amazon is closing DPReview.

habitat

On March 20, it announced that at least 100 employees had been laid off, about 2% of the company’s workforce.

Announced on March 16 that 15% of staff, or 42 people, had been cut.

Klaviyo

Announced on March 15 that it had laid off 140 of its employees across all teams.

Microsoft

As part of its recent announcement to lay off 10,000 employees, Microsoft laid off an entire team dedicated to guiding AI innovation that leads to ethical, responsible, and sustainable outcomes. On March 27, Microsoft laid off 559 employees at its Bellevue and Redmond facilities.

Meta

CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed rumors on March 14 that the company will cut 10,000 employees and around 5,000 vacancies it had yet to fill.

Y combiner

Announcement on March 13 that 20% of employees or 17 team members will be affected.

Salesforce…continued

Salesforce initially announced it would lay off 10% of its workforce in January, but some employees didn’t know until February. During the week of March 10th, more employees are just learning that they have been laid off. Salesforce confirmed that those layoffs were part of the 10%.

Atlasian

As announced on March 6th, Atlassian is laying off approximately 500 employees, or 5% of its total workforce.

SiriusXM

As announced on March 6, the company laid off 475 employees, or 8% of its total workforce.

alerzo

The Nigerian B2B e-commerce platform had more than 2,000 employees before a first round of layoffs in September 2022. Alerzo has laid off 15% of its full-time employees, the company confirmed on March 6, leaving the start-up with about 800 employees.

Brain

As announced on March 1st, the company is laying off 15% of its workforce – approximately 285 employees.

Waymo

As announced on March 1, Alphabet’s Waymo issued a second round of layoffs this year. Combined with the initial cuts in January, the self-driving technology company laid off 8%, or 209 people, of its workforce.

As announced on March 1, the company laid off about 4% of its global workforce — about 500 employees.

February 2023

Twitter

As announced on February 26, the company laid off more than 200 employees, including Esther Crawford, Haraldur Thorleifsson and Leah Culver. Since Musk took over Twitter in October of last year, the company’s headcount has fallen by more than 70%.

Poshmark

As announced on February 24th, Poshmark confirmed to TechCrunch that less than 2% of its workforce was affected, mostly in the US. The company employs more than 800 people.

Green Laboratories

We don’t have exact figures on how many Green Labs employees plan to lay off. Green Labs confirmed to TechCrunch that it is conducting a round of layoffs that could affect at least 50% of its workforce.

Chipper Cash

As announced on February 20, the African cross-border payments platform carried out a second round of layoffs just 10 weeks after shedding about 12.5% ​​of its workforce. Chipper Cash relieved almost a third of its workforce, about 100 employees.

Announced on February 16 that it would be closing its Atlanta office and laying off employees as part of the restructuring. This is the third time in less than a year that the company has laid off employees.

Announced on February 15 that 4% of the global workforce – or more than 100 employees – will be affected.

On February 13, it announced that it would lay off 7% of its workforce, approximately 85 employees.

Twilio

Announced on February 13 that approximately 17% of the global workforce, approximately 1,400 people, will be affected.

GitHub

As announced on February 9th, 10% of the workforce will be affected by the end of the company’s fiscal year. Prior to this announcement, first reported by Fortune, GitHub had approximately 3,000 employees.

Yahoo

Announced on Feb. 9, 20% of the workforce, affecting 1,600 employees in its adtech business. Yahoo is TechCrunch’s parent company.

GitLab

Announced on February 9th that it would reduce its headcount by 7%. The round of layoffs will affect around 114 people, although that specific number depends on actual headcount as of February 9.

Confirm

On Feb. 8, announced that it would cut its workforce by 19%, or about 500 employees, and close its crypto unit.

zoom

Announced on February 7th the reduction of 15% of its staff or 1,300 people.

VinFast

VinFast didn’t share how many employees were cut, but a LinkedIn post from a former employee said “nearly 35 positions” were affected. Announced February 6th.

Dell

Announced February 6, affecting 6,650 people or 5% of the global workforce.

getting around

Announced on February 2nd, 10% of the workforce – about 42 employees.

Pinterest

Announced on February 2, affecting 150 employees. This is the second job cut within weeks of the first round in December 2022.

Rivian

Announced on February 1st to cut 6% of the workforce for the second time in less than a year.

January 2023

SoFi Technologies

Announced on January 31, 65 job cuts or about 5% of 1,300 employees. First reported by the Wall Street Journal.

NetApp

Announced on January 31st, affecting 8% of the workforce – around 960 people.

Groupon

Impact on an additional 500 employees announced on January 31st. The company said this new series of layoffs will be spread over the first two quarters of 2023.

Impossible Foods

Reportedly 20% of its workforce, over 100 employees, affected, Bloomberg first reported.

PayPal

As announced on January 30, approximately 2,000 full-time employees, or 7% of the workforce, were affected.

Arrival

Announced on January 30th, with a newly appointed CEO cutting 50% of his workforce – 800 employees worldwide.

Waymo

Alphabet’s self-driving technology unit quietly laid off workers on Jan. 24, according to The Information and multiple posts on LinkedIn and Blind. It’s not yet clear how many Waymo employees will be affected.

Spotify

Announced on January 23, affecting around 6% of the global workforce – around 600 employees.

Google’s parent company announced on Jan. 21 that it would lay off 6% of its global workforce, equivalent to 12,000 employees. Those cuts will affect divisions like Area 120, Google’s incubator, and Alphabet’s robotics division, Intrinsic.

fanbase

The entertainment company announced Jan. 20 that an unspecified number of employees across multiple buildings have been affected. The company employs around 500 people, according to a Variety report, and the layoffs affect about 10% of its workforce at various locations.

Slippery

Announced plans to cut 380 jobs and close its meat market on January 20.

Sophos

As announced on January 18th, 10% of the global workforce, approximately 450 employees, have been laid off.

Microsoft

As announced on January 18, 10,000 employees will be affected.

GoMechanic

Dismissal of 70% of the workforce on January 18th.

Clearco

Announced on January 17, affecting 30% of employees across all teams.

ShareChat

As announced on Jan. 15, ShareChat laid off 20% of its workforce — or over 400 employees — just a month after cutting more than 100 jobs.

SmartNews

On Jan. 12, it announced a 40 percent reduction in its workforce in the US and China, or around 120 people.

intrinsic

Alphabet’s robotic software company Intrinsic is laying off 40 employees, TechCrunch confirmed Jan. 12. This corresponds to around 20% of the workforce.

Green light

The fintech startup, which offers debit cards to children, laid off 104 employees on Jan. 12, or over 21% of its total workforce of 485 employees.

Career Karma

Learning navigation platform Career Karma laid off an additional 22 employees across its global and domestic workforce on Jan. 12.

Direct TV

Announced Jan. 12, plans to lay off approximately 10% of its executives on Jan. 20.

computer science

On January 11th, it was reported that it would lay off 7% of its workforce, or 450 employees worldwide.

Map

As announced on Jan. 11, the equity management platform has cut 10% of its staff. Judging by LinkedIn data, the layoff could have affected around 200 employees.

Citizens

Impact on 33 employees on January 11th.

Announced Jan. 10 that it would cut 950 jobs, or about 20% of its workforce, and end “several” projects. This is the second round of major layoffs at the crypto exchange, which eliminated 18% of its workforce, or nearly 1,100 jobs, last June.

Very rare

The NFT marketplace is reducing 30% of its staff as announced on January 6th.

Amazon

Announced January 5, more than 18,000 roles to be eliminated. This announcement extends a previously announced round of layoffs into November 2022. On January 19, the company announced it would be ending AmazonSmile.

Foreclosure

On January 4th, it announced it would cut 10% of its workforce, affecting more than 7,000 employees. A month later, some Salesforce reps had just found out that they were also part of the 10 percent layoff announcement.
