A Delta flight bound for Detroit, Michigan, was forced to make an emergency landing on a remote Canadian island after an unruly passenger broke free of his restraints.

The 34-year-old traveler was said to have been “violent” on the flight and “didn’t calm down” on the journey from Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris, France.

He was restrained by airline staff but was able to free himself before five to six passengers jumped in to restrain him again.

The captain took an emergency diversion six hours into the flight and landed at Stephenville Dymond Airport on the Canadian island of Newfoundland at approximately 3:35 p.m.

The man was then arrested by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and footage of the interaction was shared online.

A clip of the incident can be seen being escorted down the aisle and out of the Airbus A330-300 with 261 passengers on board.

“Why am I under arrest?” He can be heard asking in the video.

Dena Haddad, a passenger on the Delta 97 flight, claimed the man was “violent” during the trip and “didn’t calm down.”

“We wanted to be here as soon as possible. “It was scary for a while,” she told local television station WXYZ Detroit.

Another passenger said, “When we got to Canada and saw the police cars, we felt safe and good.”

And a third added: “He was ready to throw hands.” The entire rear of the plane interacted with him.”

The flight then departed for Detroit 90 minutes after the man was removed from the plane.

A Delta spokesman said, “Delta will not tolerate unruly behavior of any kind, especially when it potentially endangers the safety of our customers and flight crew.”

“This recalcitrant customer was shipped to Stephenville, Newfoundland and Labrador and placed in the care of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.”

Unruly passengers can endanger the safety of others on board a flight, so unscheduled landings are not uncommon.

A United flight was forced to turn back three hours into its journey in April after a “disruptive” passenger sat in a flight attendant’s seat and began yelling at the crew.

In February, an American Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing after a passenger who was denied a drink rushed toward the cockpit.

And a “drunk” and “aggressive” woman on board a flight to Las Vegas was kicked off the plane last month for disorderly conduct and yelling at other passengers.
