A new documentary about the final days of the Swiss tennis star's career is in development, we learned on Monday (February 19, 2024). Oscar-winning director Asif Kapadia and co-director Joe Sabia will direct the film, which focuses on the final twelve days of Federer's illustrious career.
“Originally it was an amateur video that was never intended for the general public. “The film shows Federer at his most vulnerable and spontaneous as he says goodbye to a game and the fans that have shaped his life over the last two decades,” reads a press release.
Roger Federer, who has won 20 Grand Slam tournaments, has announced his retirement from tennis in September 2022.
“Originally the idea was to immortalize the final moments of my professional tennis career so that I could later show them to my family and friends. Throughout my career, I have avoided having cameras near me and my family, especially at important moments. But I didn't see any harm in filming it because it was never intended for the public. However, we captured so many powerful moments and it became a deeply personal journey,” the 42-year-old tennis player said in the press release.
The legendary player added: “I am delighted to be partnering with Prime Video due to its wide international reach and significant presence in the film industry.” This ensures that the story of my final days in tennis resonates with fans of the sport and a wider audience resonates around the world.”
The documentary, whose title has not yet been announced, will feature a series of interviews with Roger Federer's most famous rivals, including Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.
The documentary about Roger Federer will be broadcast exclusively on Prime Video.
