A driver dies near a work zone on the A-10 in Carignan –

A driver was killed when he crashed into a crash barrier protecting workers in a work zone on Highway 10 on Montreal’s South Shore.

The accident occurred around midnight Friday night into Saturday night on Highway 10 East, near the intersection with Highway 35, on the border of the communities of Carignan and Chambly.

The impact occurs at the beginning of a work zone on a level road. The pickup-style van drove into the rear of the impactor, which was in the left lane. Fortunately, no worker was injured as there were workers at the construction site, said Sergeant Audrey-Anne Bilodeau, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).

A man in his fifties

The driver of the vehicle was in critical condition when he was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. He was alone in the van at the time of impact.

The victim is believed to be a man in his 50s, which will need to be confirmed during formal identification.

The victim’s vehicle is subjected to an expert examination. Fatigue may have played a role in this fatal collision, but a hypothesis has not been ruled out at this time.

It is a flat, straight road. “The right lane is completely clear and for a reason that is still under investigation, our driver unfortunately hits the impact absorber blocking the left lane to protect the workers,” emphasizes Sergeant Bilodeau.

Is alcohol to blame? Of course, you will understand that we were unable to take breath samples after the driver’s death. Generally it is a request [d’analyse] What can the coroner do to exclude this hypothesis among the people examined, explained the spokesman for the SQ.

The security perimeter in the area was lifted around 5:15 a.m. Saturday morning. This section of highway is open to traffic again.
