The film will appear on television for the first time on Rai 3 The reproach. Based on a best-selling book by Karine Tuil, it examines the truth behind an alleged rape where the roles of victim and perpetrator are constantly in play.
Rai 3 broadcast the film on the evening of January 11th The reproach. Directed by Yvan Attal and starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, Matthieu Kassovitz, Pierre Arditi, Ben Attal, Suzanne Jouannet, Audrey Dana, Benjamin Lavernhe and Judith Chemla, the Rai 3 film The reproach is the adaptation of the novel “Human Things” by Karine Tuil, published in Italy by La nave di Teseo.
The story revolves around Alexandre (Alexandre Farel), a boy who is accused of raping a girl, Mila (Suzanne Jouannet). Many questions arise: who is this boy and who is this girl? Is he guilty or innocent? Are you a victim or are you just driven by a desire for revenge, as the defendant claims? The two young protagonists and their loved ones will see their lives, their faith and their certainties destroyed, but… is there only one truth?
A hot topic today
Alexandre Farel is the son of Jean, a popular television presenter. Claire, her mother, has left her husband and lives with Adam Wizman, who is also separated from his Jewish and very religious wife, with whom he has a daughter, Mila. When Alexandre returns from the USA, where he is completing his studies, he accompanies his mother for an evening and gets to know Mila. Together they decide to go to a party for the former students of Enrico IV High School. But the next day the police arrest Alexandre, who is accused of raping Mila. Is He Really Guilty?: This is the first question we ask ourselves when we see the Rai 3 movie. The reproacha drama in which factors such as class differences, religion and the pressure of the mass media hinder the discovery of the truth.
“Karine Tuil’s novel had just been published,” remembers director Yvan Attal. “I was interested in the author, who I had read other things by, and the subject: a boy accused of rape after a party. The story shocked me. I was touched by the defendant (in whom I could see my son), I was touched by the victim (in whom I could see my daughter), I identified completely with the parents of the two young people involved in this news .”
“I changed the structure of the story – there's 'he', then 'she' and finally the trial – to give the viewer time to get attached to it. I wanted to know where they came from, who they were, how they both spent the evening before the drama, why she thought he had raped her and why he thought she had consented instead. The topic was current, the characters were complex. And this book gave me, for the first time, the opportunity to break away from comedy and find myself in a kind of cinema that made me want to make films with elements that I had never had the opportunity to film: a police station , a court, a search, etc.”
“While writing the script, I met judges, police officers and lawyers to learn as much as possible about their field of activity and their professional outlook,” continued the director of the Rai 3 film The reproach. “The novel gave me great dramatic material, but I had to immerse myself in the system, in the arena in which everyone operates. The negotiation room left the biggest impression on me: there is silence there, a very strong tension. It's not theater. Lawyers, of course, enjoy “performances,” sometimes theatrical ones, but their goal is to hit hard and persuade, because the stakes are very high.”
“I witnessed a rape trial. There was no doubt that the man was guilty. But despite everything, there is one person in the box and another at the dock. Many lives are at stake and, despite all your beliefs and emotions, you come away shaken. It wasn't enough to read the novel, I had to live the experience. That was what guided my production: staying with the characters for a long time to avoid the superfluous.
