A fisherman was spooked Tuesday in South Carolina after being chased by an alligator.
The Hilton community incident was filmed by witnesses. The video shows the man retrieving his fishing rod before the reptile decides to come out of the water and charge at him. The chase was short. The fisherman was able to quickly outrun the alligator.
According to the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, alligators can run short distances at speeds of 7 to 9 miles per hour, the New York Post reported.
According to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, alligators are typically found from Texas to North Carolina. He reminded that feeding these reptiles can help eliminate their fear of humans. Also, it is illegal to feed alligators in South Carolina.
Authorities don’t know if the alligator responsible for Tuesday’s incident was fed by humans.
