A foreign farm worker is said to have killed his colleague during a football match in Montérégie –

A foreign worker who worked at a Montérégie nursery for several years is accused of killing his Mexican colleague during a simple soccer game that allegedly turned into a fight.

Marcos Almendra Ramon, 40, was charged with involuntary manslaughter at the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield Courthouse earlier this month.

However, the affair dates back to this summer. One evening in August, police officers from the Sûreté du Québec were called to the agricultural producer RGR Guinois on 4th in Sainte-Clotilde.

As we learned, an argument had just broken out between colleagues after a football game. Temporary foreign worker Hermillo Parra Octaviano was seriously injured in the fight, which resulted in an exchange of blows.

Died a month later

He was taken to hospital in critical condition. The 41-year-old man from Mexico died about a month later.

He recently worked for the company, which primarily grows lettuce and celery, owner Normand Guinois told the Journal.

For his part, Marcos Almendra Ramon had been coming to Quebec for several years to work on the market garden established in the region. According to his employer, he also comes from Mexico.

“We never had a problem with him, he came back to work every morning. He will no longer be able to return to Canada to work,” Mr. Guinois said by phone, deploring the situation.

Almendra Ramon was initially charged with aggravated assault, but the charges mounted after his colleague's death.

He waived his release examination. He will therefore remain in custody until the end of the trial, said the Crown prosecutor in the case, Me Cynthia Perreault.

In the days following the incident, the employer called the Mexican consulate at his farm to meet with his approximately 200 temporary foreign workers, remind them of the possible consequences and address issues related to alcohol consumption.
