An air of mystery and intriguing secrecy surrounds Humane, an American startup founded by Apple alumni. One of the two creators, Imran Chaudhri is none other than the designer of the iOS interface for iPhone. The other is his wife Bethanie Bongiorno, who worked with him on the iPad. Imran Chaudhri has just attended a TED conference where he lifted the veil on a new device the company is developing.
In the video filmed during this conference, the designer shows how he uses an accessory attached to his jacket. The device, powered by a homegrown AI, has no screen. It is completely autonomous and does not need to be paired with a smartphone to work. It responds to voice and gesture commands and can display information by projecting it onto nearby surfaces. During his demonstration, Imran Chaudhri called his wife. The information from that phone call was projected into his palm. During his explanations, the designer praised the merits of developing current AIs and explained that his platform was built from the ground up to work with an artificial intelligence.
Invent something radically different
He also pointed out that the device interacts in the same way as we do, by hearing and seeing, while making it clear that it fully respects privacy. In this way, the embedded AI can, for example, synthesize the important points of a meeting we are attending. As a further application demonstration, the designer showed that the device is capable of translating into French what it says in English.

For this language translation, the AI even reproduced the voice of Imran Chaudhri. AI has also been used like a chatbot to find information and get advice. Despite this demonstration, Humane’s accessory remains quite mysterious. For its creators, it serves above all to show that for the evolution of the relationship between humans and technology, something radically different and screen-free is needed.
