Unusual storm floods New York City

A strong, unusual storm flooded New York City this Friday (29), prompting the local government to declare a state of emergency for the region.

“This is a dangerous and lifethreatening storm,” said New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who declared a state of emergency for the city.

The rain quickly inundated part of the island of Manhattan, flooding streets and causing subway stations to close.

Almost all subway lines were closed, rerouted or there were delaysand two of the three lines of the MetrôNorte railway were closed.

Flights at LaGuardia Airport, one of the city’s main airports in the borough of Queens, also had to be postponed.

On a stretch of FDR Drive, a major artery in eastern Manhattan, some drivers abandoned their vehicles.

Priscilla Fontallio said she was trapped in her car, which was on a nonflooded but stopped stretch of highway, for three hours.

“I’ve never seen anything like this in my life,” she said.

Photos and videos posted on social media showed Water falls into subway stations and basements.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which manages subway lines and suburban trains, came along I’m asking residents of the country’s most populous city to stay home if they can.

Cities around New York, such as Hoboken and New Jersey, also experienced flooding.
