“The Prime Minister and his family are staying with family friends for free. In accordance with standard practice, the Office of the Commissioner for Conflicts of Interest and Ethics was consulted before the trip to ensure compliance with applicable rules,” Mr. Trudeau’s office assured in a statement sent to the QMI agency.
The family's whereabouts were not specified.
Mr. Trudeau traveled to Jamaica on December 26 with his former partner Sophie Grégoire and their children. They were due to return to the country this Thursday.
In a statement sent between Christmas and New Year, the Prime Minister's Office assured that he had committed to refunding the price of commercial airline tickets for his family's trip.
“The Prime Minister continues to reimburse the equivalent of a commercial airline ticket for his personal travel and that of his family,” his office reiterated on Thursday.
Last year, Mr. Trudeau also chose to vacation in Jamaica. This trip cost approximately $160,000. Nearly two-thirds of that amount was used to cover the costs of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which is responsible for ensuring the Prime Minister's security.
Radio-Canada also revealed that the family had stayed at a luxury hotel complex owned by a family that had made a significant donation to the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation two years earlier.
