A fugitive arrested in Murcia accused of shooting dead his

The National Police arrested a man in Molina de Segura (Murcia) accused by the Honduran judiciary of shooting dead his wife, son and mother-in-law nine years ago. The crime for which Edin O. Martínez became a fugitive occurred in September 2014, when the arrested person was 22 years old. Some relatives discovered the lifeless bodies of the son and mother-in-law and were able to speak with the seriously injured wife for a few minutes. Before he died, his wife identified him as the perpetrator of the crime.

Edin O. Martínez was arrested in the municipality of Molina de Segura (population 70,900) in Murcia while going to work. There he worked irregularly in the field and, according to the police, lived with his current – pregnant – partner. The Honduran courts are charging him with three murders.

The events for which he is being held accountable occurred on the night of September 28, 2014 in the city of Candelaria. The municipality, which belongs to the Department of Lempura, is located in the west of the country and is 96 kilometers from the border with El Salvador. Neighbors heard gunfire at the family home. The next day, several family members went to the house and found the body of the arrested man’s mother-in-law along with her injured husband. In another room they also found the arrested man’s son and his mother, who later died lifeless. According to witnesses, the fugitive fled to Spain after allegedly committing the crime.

The Spanish police received a message that the fugitive could live in Molina de Segura. Apparently, someone recognized him after consulting news on Honduran websites that identified him as the perpetrator of the three murders, police said in a press release. The Honduran newspaper La Prensa reported on September 30 that he was arrested in the municipality of Mapulaca, in the same district, 16 kilometers from Candelaria. The information was accompanied by a picture identifying him as the perpetrator of patricide, claiming, among other things, that his wife was 16 at the time and the deceased son was 18 months old. According to the Honduran police quoted by this outlet, he allegedly assaulted his son, wife and mother-in-law while they were sleeping, and although they had no clear motive for the crimes at the time, they believed jealousy was a possible trigger.

After verifying the truthfulness of the information, the Spanish investigators activated the channels of international police cooperation regarding refugees, in addition to requesting an international arrest warrant.
